Eat More Plant-Based, Without Cooking!

As a Sports Dietitian with experience working with athletes and active humans from youth to professional level, I understand the challenges athletes of all ages (and their families) have to navigate when it comes to improving the quality of their nutrition. Busy schedules, frequent travel, lack of nutrition knowledge, picky eaters, flavor fatigue, etc.

Many have the desire to increase the nutrient-density of their meals and to incorporate more plant-based foods into their diet, however this tends to add additional obstacles with required cooking, shopping for specialty items, and ensuring meals have the appropriate amount of protein and other nutrients.

While I truly believe having basic kitchen and cooking skills is an important asset for athletes, I’m big on finding ways to make life a little easier, more convenient, and to outsource some of the burden of meal prep - if/when possible!

Splendid Spoon specializes in ready-to-eat grain, soup, and noodle bowls, as well as plant-based smoothies and wellness shots. On their site, you can use their filter options and select “Higher Protein” to find bowls that offer at least 12g of protein for the container. I also love that each product has a breakdown of featured ingredients and its health promoting benefits.

For example, the Brown Rice Taco Grain Bowl includes red peppers that help increase absorption of iron; black beans that have protein and fiber to help stabilize blood sugar; and pepitas that are rich in magnesium, important for heart health, muscle function, and sleep.

Their smoothies are also delicious and packed with plant-based goodness. I loved the Coffee Frappé Smoothie that provides 22g of protein per 16 oz, plus 50g of carbohydrates, and some healthy fats. This would be a solid post-exercise smoothie, a light breakfast on-the-go, or a protein-rich midday snack!
